Kenneth D. Foster, the author of Ask and You Will Succeed: 1001 Extraordinary Question To Create Life-Changing Results sums up the purpose of his book this way:
Questions focus the mind. When you change your focus, you will consequently bring in a new awareness. When you change your awareness, you will change what you know. When you change what you know, you will have a new understanding. When you change your understanding, many times your feelings will change. When you change your feelings, you will most likely change your actions and ultimately change your destiny.
Ask and You Will Succeed is a self-help book I found surprisingly refreshing for a number of reasons:
- I'm all about questions and this book has 1001 of them that will stimulate your thinking and encourage you to focus on important aspects of life.
- This book is well organized: eight sections with four to five topics per section. For Example: the first section is Questions for the Big Picture and the topics are Values Clarification, Life Purpose, Mission in Life, Spiritual, and Contribution. Each topic is two to four pages in length.
- It's easy to use. The information is laid out to pick and choose the topics you want to read. It's a book you can easily refer to at any time.
- The content is easy to act on. Pick a topic, choose one question that you can reflect on, and then act.
The quality of the questions we ask ourselves is extremely important. The right questions
- Give us the courage to get to the heart of the matter.
- Make us STOP, think, and breathe life into possible solutions.
- Allow us to regroup, renew, and redirect our thinking.
- Give power and strength, the opposite of limitations, fear, paralysis, and instability.
- Give confidence.
Here are some examples of the questions the book offers:
- What is life asking you to do differently at this point in your life?
- What are the most important goals you can set this year?
- Who are your role models who appear to have accomplished the impossible?
- What incredible memories do I want to create today?
- Which of my attitudes or moods empowered me and which ones disempowered me?
- What good habit did I strengthen today?
Finally, here are some ways to use the information in this book:
- Create an icebreaker. What a better way to get people engaged than questions about possibilities?
- Create a pilot project. Get some people who are willing to experiment on how the right questions can help increase their own productivity with minimal stress.
- Design a game like Jeopardy for potential lunch and learn. To prepare, take a look at Section 3, Questions to Bring You What You Want, and choose a topic such as Dreams, Goal Setting, Commitment, Success, and Quantum Breakthrough. If you were to choose Quantum Breakthrough as your subject, you see a short description of the topic, followed by two pages of questions in categories such as evaluation, vision, goals, and purpose.
Recommendation
Ask and You Will Succeedby Kenneth D. Foster is a self-help book that helps by providing useful questions, not easy answers. It's worth a look and can be the basis for learning activities in a work setting.
